The additional spirits originate from the Witch Doctor in the following few seconds after the intial Spirit Barrage was cast. This effect stacks and is capable of producing many small spirits if the spell is cast quickly. Fierce Loyalty is a Witch Doctor passive skill unlocked at Level 45, which grants Witch Doctor's thorns damage and life regeneration from items to all pets.

The Life Regeneration conferred to pets comes from both items and skills. Currently, the only skills which will contribute life to pets are skills which specifically state life regeneration in the tooltip.

These skills include: One Passive Skill, Blood Ritual; and two Active Skills, Big Bad Voodoo - Ghost Trance and Spirit Walk - Healing Journey.
This rune effect summons an odd-looking ghostly specter that hovers over the Witch Doctor for 20 seconds, lobbing spirit bolts at enemies for 28% weapon damage.
Each hit has a chance to cause on-hit effects from weapons such as freeze, fear, stun, etc. Each hit contributes life if using items with Life on Hit.

Another interesting rune effect name, this one refers to a spirit being or state in Native American mythology. A quote from the wikipedia article:

::Manitou is a term used to designate spirit beings among many Algonquian groups of Native Americans. It refers to the concept of one aspect of the interconnection and balance of nature/life, similar to the East Asian concept of qi or the Hindu concept of Brahman;[citation needed] in simpler terms it can refer to a spirit (compare to the Japanese concept of kami). This spirit is seen as a (contactable) person as well as a concept. Everything has its own manitou—every plant, every stone, even machines.[citation needed]
Trivia

Lingering Spirit is a rune effect in Haunt, a a Spirit Realm Witch Doctor skill.

This rune effect causes the spirit to be drawn towards the Witch Doctor after its initial victim has perished. The spirit will remain, swirling around the Witch Doctor for the remaining duration, when a target finds it's way near the Witch Doctor, the spirit will latch on to the new target without the Witch Doctor having to cast.

Casting Lingering Spirit while no enemies are on screen will cause the spirit to immediately be drawn around the Witch Doctor. For each Spirit summoned in this way, one monster who comes in close proximity to the Witch Doctor can be haunted for the remaining duration of a single Lingering Spirit.

For instance, if there are no enemies on the screen and the Witch Doctor casts 3 Lingering Spirits, and shortly afterwards, 3 monsters close in on the Witch Doctor, each of the monsters will be haunted. A single monster cannot have more than one Lingering Spirit affecting it at a time.

You may consider this spell a type of stackable, short duration damage armor in the vein of a Wizard's Ice or Storm armor spells.

Pyrogeist is a rune effect in Firebomb, is a Physical Realm Witch Doctor skill.

This rune effect changes the firebomb to a column of flame that spews fire at the closest enemy for 140% weapon damage over 3 seconds. Only one Pyrogeist may be active at one time.

The range of the Pyrogeist flames is medium to far.

Note the terms; that's 140% over 3 seconds = 47% per second. Compare to Fire Pit, which retains the base skill (85% damage) + 8% per second for 3 seconds (24%). So each Fire Pit can deal 109% in 3 seconds, to all enemies in the area, while Pyrogeist is 124% to a single target.

Pyrogeist maintains a single advantage over Fire Pit in that it has a more reliable chance to hit an enemy, due to it's ability to track movement. This skill seems to be geared towards hard-to-hit targets such as Burrowing Leapers, Desert Hornets, and at some point, other players during PvP matches.

Plague Bats is a rune effect in Firebats, a Physical Realm Witch Doctor skill.
This rune effect changes the damage type to poison, and causes the damage to scale up the longer a target is bathed in the rodent parade.

The tooltip for this skill is unclear. To clarify:
The total damage from this one slowly rises to 220%, however, the damage also has the additional effect of lingering on the target even while the Witch Doctor has finished casting.

A quick spray of Plague Bats will induce a small DoT effect, while an extended spray of Plague Bats will induce a more damaging, extended duration damage-over-time effect.

This effect is also useful for triggering Life on Hit effects and chance-on-hit effects from equipment such as Stun,Freeze,Fear, etc.

Toad of Hugeness is a rune effect in Plague of Toads, a Physical Realm Witch Doctor skill.

This rune effect is one of the funniest to see in the game, as a single giant toad is summoned. This toad eats enemies whole, by shooting out its tongue and yanking them into its mouth. The toad is stationary, and generally eats just one enemy during its five second duration.

The damage is limited from this effect, so when the toad eats an Elite it will chew on them for a moment before spitting them out, with a big bar of health removed. This can be inconvenient in a party game, since no other players can hit the enemy while it's inside the toad's belly. However, enemies affected by debuffs and Damage over Time effects will retain the debuff and the DoT effect while swallowed Toad of Hugeness, making it a good idea to apply these types of effects before using Toad of Hugeness.

Some enemies cannot be swallowed. Enemies immune to the swallow effect will instead receive damage when hit by the toad's tongue.
* 0:07 – 0:11 — Ancient Spear runed to grant multishot.
* 0:13 – 0:27 — Wrath of the Berserker (seen for the first time) with an unknown rune.
* 0:15 – 0:24 — Earthquake(seen for the first time) runed(most likely) for the field of fire.
* 0:18 – 0:22 — Cleave used while the flames continue to burn.

And the female Barbarian:
* 0:34 – 0:35 — Ground Stomp with an aqua-colored rune effect.
* 0:35 – 0:38 — Weapon Throw with an unknown rune.
* 0:39 – 0:43 — Seismic Slam with an unknown rune.
* 0:44 – 0:45 — Possibly Rend. Or maybe Frenzy.
* 0:46 – 0:51 — Whirlwind - With an Indigo Rune creating mini-twisters.
* 0:05 – 0:10 — Locust Swarm with individual flight patterns visible. Looks like the unruned version seen before.
* 0:11 – 0:20 — Zombie Charger with a Crimson Runestone, changing the skill to Zombie Bears. The bears function as spectral objects, as they run through enemies and deal damage in a straight line; they don’t actually grizzly maul. (Unfortunately.)
* 0:21 – 0:25 — Plague of Toads the Golden Runestone, changing the skill to Toad Affinity, which allows the Witch Doctor to cast the spell at a reduced Mana cost.
* 0:26 – 0:32 — Wall of Zombies with an Obisidian Runestone, changing the skill to Dead Rush. The zombies rot to skeletons as they move outwards. See also Zombie Tower.
* 0:38 – 0:40 — Exploding Palm possibly unruned.
* 0:39 – 0:42 — Possibly a runed Shock Pulse.
* 0:43 – 0:49 — Energy Twister with a rune that cause the twisters that clash to combine as mentioned in another interview.
* 0:50 – 1:01 — Most likely Arcane Torrent, firing a series of purple spearhead-like projectiles at the targeted spot. It’s not known if this is the default version or a runestone effect, as this skill hasn't been seen or playable at any point since 2009 Blizzcon.

* 0:30 – 0:33 — Way of the Hundred Fists has new graphics. Note the punch delivered while holding a staff.. Whether it is runed or not is unknown.
* 0:34 – 0:37 — Wave of Light. In this version the bell is dropped, then rung, knocking back nearby enemies. It’s seen in use against some Goatmen in the recent b-roll movie.
* 0:38 – 0:40 — Exploding Palm possibly unruned.
* 0:13 – 0:17 — Strafe (seen for the first time) giving the Demon Hunter a sort of “Death Blossom” effect, causing the DH to turn black and spin around, emitting much ordnance.
* 0:18 – 0:29 — Shadow Power (seen for the first time) which gives the DH glowing purple wings. It is unknown if it can enhance skills like Archon.
* 0:20 – 0:26 — Rapid Fire showing some amazing machine gun speed. It is unknown if it is runed or not, and as just mentioned, whether Shadow Power is enhancing it or not.

And the female Demon Hunter:
* 0:35 – 0:38 — Bola Shot runed for a green triple arrow effect.
* 0:39 – 0:43 — Most likely Impale. The only other time we saw this skill is within the recent b-roll movie.
* 0:44 – 0:49 — Chakram is the name of this glowing, spinning, giant boomerang ninja star ability. Most likely runed for lightning damage.
* 0:50 – 0:55 — Most likely Rain of Arrows (seen for the first time), which fires shots straight up into the air, and a second later numerous black/invisible meteor type projectiles come smashing down. Possibly a rune effect.
* 0:56 – 1:01 — Vault with a runestone adding a sort of Blaze Blaze effect that leaves flaming ground behind the Demon Hunter.
Big Bad Voodoo is a Support Witch Doctor skill unlocked at level 25. This skill summons a fetish to perform a ritual dance which buffs all nearby allies with increased attack, casting and movement speed.
Skill Effects
The following is a very quick list. See the Big Bad Voodoo rune effects page for a more thorough summary of rune effects, or any of the individual rune pages for numbers, screenshots, blue quotes, and much more.

Skill Design
The skill was first demonstrated at the July 2011 Press Event in the b-roll video. The skill appears to be 3 fetish stacked upon one another with the topmost fetish wearing a mask and waving a staff. The skill creates a green aura on the ground around the fetish which affects party members within radius. It has been said to increase casting speed, but nothing solid has been confirmed.

The Skill Animations Videos are a set of five videos featuring each class demonstrating a number of skills, and were released (or leaked) in August 2011. The characters are in a featureless black environment without companions or monsters. In every video, the male version of each class is demonstrated first, then the female.

Barbarian Video
The skills demonstrated by the male Barbarian:
* 0:03 – 0:06 — Hammer of the Ancients with redesigned graphics, or possibly with an unknown rune.
* 0:07 – 0:11 — Ancient Spear runed to grant multishot.
* 0:13 – 0:27 — Wrath of the Berserker (seen for the first time) with an unknown rune.
* 0:15 – 0:24 — Earthquake(seen for the first time) runed(most likely) for the field of fire.
* 0:18 – 0:22 — Cleave used while the flames continue to burn.

And the female Barbarian:
* 0:34 – 0:35 — Ground Stomp with an aqua-colored rune effect.
* 0:35 – 0:38 — Weapon Throw with an unknown rune.
* 0:39 – 0:43 — Seismic Slam with an unknown rune.
* 0:44 – 0:45 — Possibly Rend. Or maybe Frenzy.
* 0:46 – 0:51 — Whirlwind - With an Indigo Rune creating mini-twisters.

<youtube>r8QF6C8LYaY</youtube>

The skills demonstrated by the male Witch Doctor:
* 0:03 – 0:09 — Grasp of the Dead with what is most likely an Obsidian Runestone, changing the skill to Unbreakable Grasp. It creates a cemetery of grasping zombie hands.

And the female Witch Doctor:
* 0:36 – 0:38 — Summon Zombie Dogs, possibly runed to summum three Mongrels at once. Or maybe it's just a visual shortcut for the video.
* 0:38 – 0:40 — Sacrifice, either runed to explode all Mongrels at once, or perhaps (like the previous skill) it's just a visual shortcut for the video.
* 0:41 – 0:48 — Firebats, possibly unruned.
* 0:43 – 0:50 — Haunt with new and improved graphics. It might be a runestone effect that turns them into hovering helpers, ready to attack enemies on sight. Also, what are they... skeletal baby porpoises?
* 0:55 – 0:59 — Firebomb with an Indigo rune, changing the skill to Roll the Bones. This allows the skull to bounce and deal multiple hits.
* 1:01 – 1:07 — Mass Confusion (possibly unruned) for the big finish.

Wizard Video
The skills demonstrated by the male Wizard:
* 0:01 – 0:14 — Hydras are cast and fire for a bit.
* 0:06 – 0:10 — Most likely Electrocute.
* 0:12 – 0:16 — Arcane Orb, possibly unruned.
* 0:16 – 0:31 — Archon (seen for the first time). It turns the Wizard into an elemental looking being for a short duration, and greatly increases skill damage.
* 0:17 – 0:18 — Possibly Explosive Blast, possibly modified by the Archon effect.
* 0:19 – 0:28 — Disintegrate, modified by the Archon effect.

And the female Wizard:
* 0:35 – 0:38 — Magic Missile with an Indigo rune.
* 0:39 – 0:42 — Possibly a runed Shock Pulse.
* 0:43 – 0:49 — Energy Twister with a rune that cause the twisters that clash to combine as mentioned in another interview.

* 0:41 – 0:48 — Firebats, possibly unruned.
* 0:43 – 0:50 — Haunt with new and improved graphics. It might be a runestone effect that turns them into hovering helpers, ready to attack enemies on sight. Also, what are they... skeletal baby porpoises?
* 0:55 – 0:59 — Firebomb with an Indigo rune to make it bounce and deal multiple hits.
* 1:01 – 1:07 — Mass Confusion (possibly unruned) for the big finish.

* 0:12 – 0:16 — Arcane Orb, possibly unruned.
* 0:16 – 0:31 — Archon (seen for the first time). It turns the Wizard into an elemental looking being for a short duration, and greatly increases skill damage.
* 0:17 – 0:18 — Possibly Explosive Blast, possibly modified by the Archon effect.
* 0:19 – 0:28 — Disintegrate, modified by the Archon effect.

And the female Wizard:
* 0:35 – 0:38 — Magic Missile with an Indigo rune.
* 0:39 – 0:42 — Possibly a runed Shock Pulse.
* 0:09 – 0:12 — Dashing Strike, it is unknown if it is runed or not.
* 0:14 – 0:16 — Seven Sided Strike. Probably this is the default, but the skill hasn’t been seen since 2009 so it might be a runestone effect.
* 0:17 – 0:19 — Blinding Flash with as unknown rune providing a green nova-type blast of light.

And the female Monk:
* 0:26 – 0:28 — Most likely Deadly Reach. The only other time we saw this skill is within the recent b-roll movie.
* 0:38 – 0:40 — Exploding Palm possibly unruned.
* 0:41 – 0:48 — Tempest Rush (seen for the first time). The Monk runs along, spinning a spectral staff before her.

* 0:05 - 0:08 — Multishot with an unknown rune effect giving the arrows a purple gleam.
* 0:09 - 0:12 — Most likely Elemental Arrow runed for electrical orbs.

* 0:35 – 0:38 — Bola Shot runed for a green triple arrow effect.
